Meeting with ‘’Verpėjos’’ residents Marijonas Verbal and Sophie Durand

On September 28 from 12 – 17 p.m we invite you to the “Verpejos” homestead for lunch followed by presentations by the September residents where Marijonas and Sophie will share their experiences and creations from the past month.

The menu for the lunch will be based on collective cooking in the Verpejos kitchen and will use ingredients from the area. Sophie will invite you to learn how to collect data from the new Verpejos Weather Station and Marijonas will share a series of new works.

The “Verpejos” art residency is located in a traditional homestead in the village of Kabeliai in the Varėna district.

Please let us know if you will be arriving by car and can assist with carpools or collecting guests arriving on the 12:30 train to Marcinkonys. Please note the last train leaves Marcinkonys at 16:50.

Marijonas Verbel is a Lithuanian textile artist with a special focus in weaving, crafts and art education. They are inspired by domestic life, play, routine, and how things coalesce altogether. In their weaving practice they rely on the relationship between time and labour while also playing within the thin line that is between craft and art. In their creative process they aim to use found objects and recycle materials to the utmost. With this practice, they emphasize not only the final result but also the process and the story of the creation process.

Sophie Durand is an artist from Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia based in Vilnius. Sophie’s multi-disciplinary practice extends from the intersection of sculpture and performance art and draws from anecdotal histories and archives of landscape for subject matter. Currently she is looking at strategies to reposition her artworks within environmental settings and to work more empathetically with ecological systems.
