Group exhibition “Sampyna”

SAMPYNA / SAMRUNI

On August 3, at 2 p.m. exhibition “Sampyna” by artists Austė Jurgelionytė-Varnė, Asta Vilhelmina Guðmundsdóttir and Laura Pavilonytė-Ežerskienė opens in Marcinkonių station gallery.

In Lithuanian, the word sampyna refers to a certain tangle of structural elements a junction that reflects the work of three artists – Austė Jurgelionytė-Varnė, Asta Vilhelmina Guðmundsdóttir and Laura Pavilonytė-Ežerskienė’s acquaintance, unexpected encounters, and their based on the community. Both Austė and Laura visited Iceland and there at different times visited Asta’s studio and was inspired by her experimental work and interdisciplinary work approach to working with textile materials. Asta also visited Lithuania several times, here has organized exhibitions, conducted creative workshops at the VDA Department of Textile Art and Design for students. All artists are united by a natural love and respect for nature, hence the inclination to create sustainably, using natural textile fibers (mostly wool, linen) and found around materials of organic and inorganic origin (horse hair, algae, stones, frogs, needles, etc.), paint with plant-based dyes, nurture slow handmade technologies. At the SAMPYNA (Icelandic equivalent of SAMRUNI) exhibition, all textile manufacturers the works, like intended or unintended personal encounters, intertwine into a whole installation, as if extending the meaning of the concept that we are all connected in some way, regardless of geographical distances or cultural differences.
